Where Fate Lies Unbound by Warseid

Hello my fellow Heathens! We have another Folk EP to review, and it is a quite interesting one! Folk metal is an intriguing sub-genre of metal, one that could range from a power metal sound, to the brutality of extreme Death Metal. Warseid, however, stands out with their new EP, Where Fate Lies Unbound. These guys perform very melodic Folk Metal, and will even use some techniques from Black Metal. They are another band that pushes this genre to its limits, and redefine it. Der Metal Krieger had the pleasure to review this amazing EP.

Band: Warseid
Album: Where Fate Lies Unbound
Genre: Folk/Black Metal
Label: Unsigned
Release Date: Summer 2012

First, I must say that this EP blew my mind. I really enjoyed how the band wrote their music. It has a nice progressive flow, with elements of Death, Black, and Folk. The opening track, “Shackles Through Sand”, really draws you in. Starting off with a gentle acoustic guitar, it then leads into a steady heavy, melodic riff, that shows the true skill and range of this band.  This song will go through a series of changes in timing, as well as the setting of the atmosphere. It sounds rather dark in the heavy portions, but inspirational tunes with the softer parts. This track is a great one to start off with, and will keep you craving more.

This EP has more pros than cons. The only con that someone might point it is the simple fact of the length of each track. Each track is very lengthy, roughly 6-10 minutes. Unless you are used to the length of Dream Theater and Moonsorrow songs, you might find them to be a bit long. But this band would not be able to show their full potential in a 3-4 minute song so the length is a necessity. Then again this Black/Folk fusion always has longer more emphatic songs.  I personally think that each person who listens in to these guys should at least listen to each track in it’s entirety once. Just so that they see all the hard work these guys put in pay off. You won’t regret doing so.

Where Fate Lies Unbound is a great little EP to pick up, especially if you are looking for something to spice up your music library. The band ranges in so many sub-genres, and can adapt to them very easily. With the instrumentation of Folk and Death, with the vocals of Black metal, this band develops a very unique sound. Check these guys out, and get the EP. It’ll be a great little addition for your music taste buds, and introduce you to a very underrated band that has a lot to offer. Keep on the look out for any new material these guys will release. If they can set out an incredible EP, then a full-length album would be simply amazing.
