Hello there my headbanging friends! Today I am recovering from one brutal day, at the Summer Slaughter Tour. This tour lives up to its statement of being “The Most Extreme Tour of The Summer“. With over 10 hours of extreme metal, this is any metalhead’s dream (next to the metal cruises). I must say, there is not one aspect of the show that I disliked. The line up was solid, and it was an experience that I’ll never forget!
Line Up:
Cannibal Corpse (Headline)
Between The Buried And Me (Headline)
The Faceless
Periphery
Veil of Maya
Job For A Cowboy
Goatwhore
Exumed
Cerebral Bore
The Contortionist (Special Guest)
Sithis (local opener)
On this hot, and humid summer day, I was there to do press for Job For A Cowboy and Periphery. While waiting to do so, I met the bassist of Exhumed, Leon del Muerte. He was a really nice guy to talk, though we couldn’t chat for long. Once I got into the venue, and got my press stuff situated at the box office, I had time to kill before the interviews. I went and watched Cerebral Bore, and those guys bring hard-hitting sounds! They blew my mind, and I just couldn’t get enough of this band. Their lead singer Simone Pluijmers ( female vocalist for the win!), had some of the most brutal death growls that I have ever heard in a long time. These guys were definitely a great band to watch, and their music was very interesting. After their set, I went to talk to Simone, and just told her how much I enjoyed their performance. We exchanged contact info, and after the tour, Der Metal Krieger will be having an exclusive interview with them!
After Cerebral Bore, I had the pleasure of watching Exhumed, and even moshed during Goatwhore’s set. Both bands had a solid performance, (minus the usual technical problems at the Troc). Both bands recovered quickly from these difficulties, and the fans were there to back them up every step of the way. It was great to see the fans cheer on the guys, even when they were rushing to fix the problem. Always great to see them respecting their idols. After their sets, it was time for JFAC. Right away, the band got straight to business, and unleashed chaos on stage. Played primarily songs from Ruination and Demonocracy. The guys played clean, hit hard, and made great connections with the crowd.
Before I knew it, it was time to interview Johnny Davy, the front man of JFAC! If you ever want to have some good and hilarious conversations, then go meet this guy at the merch booth. He is very laid back, and loves to hear what the fans think of their work. He gave some great insight to how the band develops their music, and how they evolved over the years. He stated that they do not want to be a band that is tied to one type of sound, and which is why their sound has changed from Genesis to Demonocracy. Job For A Cowboy is one interesting band!
As the show progressed, I saw Veil of Maya, and then Periphery. Being the only Djent band on the tour, they were quite interesting to see perform. These guys had the crowd going crazy! The whole venue turned into a huge pit, and the interaction was one of the best I’ve ever seen at a metal show. Periphery’s style is very interesting: it has the progressive Djent sound, with a little splash of death metal thrown in there. Their songs sound unique, and there was never a moment where I felt their set melded together. When their set ended, it was time to saddle up and prepare for our interview with Jake Bowen, one of the guitarist of the band. Now these Periphery is one hell of a band to talk to! Just to hear what goes through their creative minds is great! Jake stated all the little techniques that they use ( anything from 6 strings to 8 strings, and complex timings), and what makes the band stand out from the rest. They picked the name Periphery, because they feel that no one can really tell what type of genre they are and so fans will check them out for themselves. Also, the name was picked because they are on the boundaries of the metal genre. All in all, Jake was a great guy with a very expansive knowledge of music.
The show all together was a great time. The two headliners, Between The Buried And Me and the legendary Cannibal Corpse put on an excellent show. Summer Slaughter had a lot to offer for those into the extreme metal genres, and fans had the opportunity to interact with the members at their merch stands. If you have a few extra bucks lying around, why not go to an awesome show before school kicks back up again? Meeting bands, headbanging with friends, and enjoying some great music sounds like an excellent last hurrah! Go out, enjoy yourself, maybe pick up some merch and get photos taken with your favorites, and survive the Slaughter!
